Scaffolding pole damages train

A TRAIN hit an 8ft piece of scaffolding on the railway line near Millwood Tunnel, Todmorden.

The metal pole became embedded in the front of the Northern Rail train. No one was injured but trains were delayed by up to half an hour.

The damage is expected to have cost around 400.

British Transport Police launched an investigation into the incident, which happened at around noon on Sunday. The train was the 11.08am Manchester Victoria to Leeds.

Officers will examine CCTV footage and make inquiries in the area. The pole will be examined for any forensic evidence.

Pc John Clethro said: "This was a reckless act of vandalism and I cannot emphasise strongly enough the dangers associated with this type of crime. It's vital that we find those involved in this incident in order to point out the possible catastrophic consequences of their actions. Luckily no-one was injured.

"This type of offence could have easily caused derailment of the train and serious injuries to people onboard."
