The scarecrow formerly known as Prince: Thieves leave just his boots

All that was left was his boots - with a sign saying “The scarecrow formerly known as Prince”.

Organisers of the popular event hailed it a huge success, with around 10,000 people visiting the village over nine days.

However, the thefts - which also included a sheep scarecrow and a number of Dalmatians - left organisers and members of the public reeling.

Scores of people took to The Official Muston Scarecrow Festival Facebook page to make their feelings know about the heartless acts.

One of the organisers wrote: “Just a mention of the two ladies in the orange car that just took a scarecrow ‘sheep’ from the village green and drove off at high speed. Thanks! It is only because Muston does not want to be petty that we have not published your registration number here.”

Comments from angry festival supporters included: “There’s some sad people in the world - why would they do that?” and “Do report this to the police with the registration number. It is theft, coupled with antisocial behaviour.”

Cllr Godfrey Allanson, one of the organisers, told the Mercury: “The most worrying thing is that some of these were taken in broad daylight.

“I can only hope that they get their comeuppance some time in life.”

Cllr Allanson said that apart from the thefts, the event had been hugely positive and that visitors had thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

He added: “We’ve had fantastic support and some wonderful teams of helpers who have looked after the car parking.

“We’re also lucky that we didn’t get any serious rain, so we could keep the field open for cars.”

It is not yet known how much was raised during the event, but proceeds will go towards supporting a Heritage Lottery Fund bid to build a new village hall and will also go towards other village projects.
