School hall is transformed in a classic imaginative project

A SCHOOL hall was transformed into a magical world as part of project to ignite children’s interest in classic literature.

Staff at Yeadon Westfield Junior School created their ‘Thing in the Hall’ theme centred on classic children’s books Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Jungle Book, The Wizard of Oz and The Enchanted Forest.

Children entered ‘The Enchanted Forest’ section of the hall down the ‘slippery slide.’

Staff dressed as characters from the books for role play and drama.

And children of all ages carried out a wide range of activities from all areas of the curriculum, including writing, reading, art work, music and cookery.

The ‘Thing in the Hall’ idea originated at Yeadon Westfield Junior School 16 years ago during a course run by Leeds Playhouse staff.

It explored the use of creative environments to stimulate English, particularly pupils who were reluctant writers.

The school has launched the ‘Thing in the Hall’ every four years.

Previous themes have included ‘Under the Sea,’ ‘Imaginary Worlds,’ and ‘Final Frontiers.’
