School lunch for grandma

It was back to school grub yesterday for the first time in half a century as Joan Blair and her grandson Archie sat down to bridge a three-generation gap.

Mrs Blair is a former boarding pupil at Cundall Manor School – now a co-educational day and boarding site for children aged two and a half to 16 years – in the Vale of York, near Thirsk. Tomorrow, the school is hosting its first Grandparents Day, including a Grandparents' Lunch in the school's cricket pavilion, as part of the main school sports day.

To launch the event, Mrs Blair and her grandson got a taster of the menu and shared her memories. Her three children followed in her footsteps and now Archie, aged two and a half, has joined the nursery. Headmaster Peter Phillips said: "Continuity and the huge value of families are very important here. Grandparents are often very supportive, as with Mrs Blair. Grandparents' Day is a way that the school can say thank you to them."
