School pupils get chance to sculpt future of park

PRIMARY school children have been giving a helping hand to a sculptor designing a piece of art for Whitby's Pannett Park.

Darren Yeadon will carve the artwork during February and March in the park's children's play area, which opened last summer as part of regeneration.

The work will be based around the concept of sea monsters, in keeping with the play area's nautical theme and linking with Whitby's maritime history.

Mr Yeadon worked with children at West Cliff Primary School and members of Dalewood Trust on the design as part of work by Scarborough Council's Civic Pride Steering Group to engage the community in the project.

Robert Everiss, the Council's Pannett Park Project Officer, said: "The workshops have been aimed at showing children how sculptors plan their work.

Those taking part were given the opportunity to draw up their suggestions and will later have the chance to see some of those ideas turn into reality when the finished creation is placed in the park."
