Sergeant Mike Pickersgill, of Selby Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “We will continue making arrests and running operations until people get the message that stealing metal for scrap is unacceptable.

“There has been a recent trend developing that has seen people stealing drain covers and grates from the side of the road. This is not only illegal but also leaves large gaps in the road which is a danger to road users.

“Obviously metal theft is a concern but putting a stop to it is a priority in Selby district and anyone coming into the area with the intention of stealing metal should be mindful that we are on the lookout for them.”

Anyone with information about metal thefts in their area is urged to contact North Yorkshire Police on 0845 6060 247 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
