Sculptor builds on tradition

A BRICKLAYER who embarked on a new career as a sculptor has turned the Yorkshire tradition of dry-stone walling to a new art.

Johnny Clasper, from Harrogate, has completed his first organic free-form wall and has claimed that he is on a mission to “re-invent the way people design their gardens”.

He added: “Dry stone walling doesn’t use cement or any form of bonding material at all, so it’s a craft that requires a lot of patience and skill to create that perfect combination of weight versus gravity.

“I wanted to break the rules and create something that’s very much homage to that tradition and skill, but with an edge. It’s radical design that blends with nature.”

His work will feature in an exhibition at the Thorp Perrow Arboretum near Bedale.
