Sewing the seeds of battle

It has been seven years in the making and has seen a group of sewing enthusiasts meet religiously each week to create Yorkshire’s answer to the Bayeux Tapestry.

Now, with just months to go until the final stitch is sewn, the Fulford Tapestry Group including Mary Ann Dearlove, above, is launching a fundraising drive so it can be displayed in all its glory.

The 15ft tapestry depicts the Battle of Fulford, when the invading Viking army, led by Harald Hardrada, triumphed over the English forces in a brutal victory seen as crucial in the run-up to the Battle of Hastings and William the Conqueror ultimately becoming King of England. She said: “We need to raise £5,000 to have a special stand made for it and mounted. It will be on display at the York Viking Festival in February, which is when we will start fundraising.” picture: gerard binks
