Sherlock Holmes record attempt smashed in Leeds

How many Sherlocks does it take to break a record?

Hundreds of deerstalkered detectives descended on Temple Newsam in Leeds today to see if the challenge was as elementary as it sounded.

More than 250 people were required to be dressed as Sherlock Holmes in the bid to break the Guinness World Record.

And according to the head count on the day, the record was smashed as more than 400 people stepped out dressed as Conan Doyle’s famous hero.

The mysterious meeting, which was held to raise money for the Yorkshire Brain Research Centre at St James’ Hospital in Leeds, received a message of support from the writer of the BBC hit series Sherlock and Dr Who, Steven Moffat, and his wife, producer Sue Vertue. The video message said: “We are very proud that Sherlock is helping raise awareness and funds for Yorkshire Brain Research.”

The new research centre will help deal with life-limiting brain conditions, including Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis and dementia.

The centre will conduct research for patient benefit and will help scientists find new treatments and drug therapies.
