Shipping firm steps out for charity

Family-owned John Good Group decided to mark the milestone in their history with a 180-mile sponsored walk in aid of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI).

Starting from Albert Dock, Liverpool, on July 6, 150 staff, their families and friends will cover stages of the walk back to Hull, which aims to raise £10,000.

Group managing director Alan Platt said: “It was felt that connecting two of the country’s major ports, Liverpool and Hull, a distance of 180 miles by foot, would be an appropriate way of celebrating the Group’s 180th year in business, as well as an excellent way to raise funds for a worthwhile cause.

“We have strong links with the RNLI – the original John Good was heavily involved in safety at sea and was indeed himself rescued on two occasions. Marine safety is a top priority for us, which is why the RNLI was the obvious choice.”

In 1813 John Good, aged just 11, signed onto the sailing brig “British Volunteer” to begin a life-time association with the sea. He set up an office in Hull, founding John Good & Co as Ship Chandlers, Agents and Brokers, in 1833.
