Shops’ new look makes for grand entrance

A SCHEME to breathe new life into a shopping centre in the heart of a North Yorkshire town in the hope of attracting more business was unveiled yesterday.

A new entrance at the Market Cross Shopping Centre in Selby has been created using magnesium limestone from the same supplier involved in the restoration of the town’s abbey.

Work started on improvements to shop fronts and the entrance at the end of January and the project’s completion was marked yesterday with an official ceremony organised by the centre’s owners, Dransfield Properties Ltd.

The project has been supported by Selby District Council and the town’s Heritage Partnership Scheme as well as English Heritage, which have provided funding towards the £55,000 improvements.

Selby District Council’s leader Mark Crane said: “I am pleased with the works completed by Dransfield Properties at Market Cross.

“This brings a fresher look to the centre and I hope to see the area continue to thrive and trust that we will see more and more people within the district coming to Selby to spend their money. I wish all the shops in Market Cross well for the coming year.”

The dated main Gowthorpe entrance to the shopping centre has been replaced with the traditional magnesium limestone fascia supplied by the same company used by Selby Abbey in its restoration projects.

Alexanders Two and Cartridge Point, which trade from the two units either side of the entrance walkway, have also been given new hardwood shop fronts as part of the centre’s facelift. Local firm Harry Jackson Shopfitting Ltd has worked on the project.

New shop fronts have also been installed at a number of other units at the centre throughout the last year.

The shopping centre has also seen new tenants including Lemon and Lime as well as Ladbrokes open outlets in recent months.
