Show goes on for city statue appeal

plans to build a statue to 1950s singing star David Whitfield may have been blocked by councillors – but the people behind the project have insisted the show must go on.

Another Hull-born entertainer, Joe Longthorne, will perform at the New Theatre on Saturday to raise money for the David Whitfield Statue Appeal.

The concert comes weeks after Hull Council’s planning committee rejected proposals to erect the statue in Kingston Square, just outside the theatre.

The David Whitfield Appreciation Society is continuing to seek funds for the tribute, which is being created by sculptor Graham Ibbeson, having already raised more than £30,000, and would like to see the statue somewhere in the city centre.

Concert producer Tony Jo said: “It’s fantastic to be able to pay tribute to an artist of the stature of David Whitfield on behalf of the people of Hull.

“To see the statue finally erected, and to have been a part of it, will give us all a great sense of achievement.”

The concert features a range of artists and starts at 7.30pm. To book tickets, which cost £25, £15, and £10, call 01482 226655.
