Signal for joy

THERE was joy in equal measure from soldiers and their families as they returned to their base at Imphal Barracks in York following a tour of duty in Afghanistan.

More than 100 servicemen, including a large Gurkha contingent, arrived back in the UK after serving for five months in the war zone with 2 Signal Regiment.

Their main purpose in Afghanistan was to provide communication services and force protection. The rest of their regiment are expected to fly back into this country over the next couple of weeks, according to the Ministry of Defence. The homecoming, on Saturday, had been delayed for 24 hours.
