Signed deal allows school building to begin

Work has begun on a new £6.7m primary school in Hull after contracts were signed between the Esteem Consortium, Hull Council, and investors behind the project at Endike Primary School.

The school will be rebuilt on the existing site as part of Hull’s £400m building schools for the future (BSF) programme, and the new premises will be open for the school year starting in September 2012.

The school is being built by the city-based Sewell Group, which has promised to deliver “first rate” facilities.

Sewell Group project director Rob Cawkwell said: “This is fantastic news for all concerned. Reaching financial close will now allow us to crack on and deliver a wonderful new school.

“Not only will those directly involved with the school see the benefits but the local economy as a whole will reap the rewards from this significant investment. As a Hull-based company we are really proud to be building the new Endike Primary School and relish the opportunity to transform the learning environment of so many current and future pupils at the school.”

Similar deals are close to being struck for Malet Lambert School and the new as yet unnamed academy located in the northern area of the city on the former Princess Elizabeth playing fields.

Another phase of new build work at Oakfield Special School, Kingswood College of Arts, Andrew Marvell Business and Enterprise College is being negotiated.

The BSF programme will see every secondary and special school in the city rebuilt or remodelled.

Pauline Davis, the council’s corporate director for regeneration, said: “I’m delighted that we have achieved another major milestone on the BSF programme. Endike Primary School will form part of the northern area improvement plan and along with the new academy this will include enhanced green open space along Beverley Road. It is a huge investment for the whole of the northern area and will provide first class teaching and learning facilities.”
