Singer flies Eurovision flag for Britain

Engelbert Humperdinck will leave his home in Leicestershire today to travel to Azerbaijan in the hope of bringing back the Eurovision crown for Britain.

The 76-year-old singer, best known for his number one hits Release Me and The Last Waltz, will fly to Baku, hoping to fly the flag for the country in the grand final on Saturday May 26 with the song Love Will Set You Free.

Answering criticism over his age, Humperdinck said: ‘I don’t think age has got anything to do with the singing, with the contest. It’s not a talent competition, it’s a song contest and because of my experience of travelling around the world and being an ambassador for my country, I think it stands a good chance.’

Sweden are as favourites – at odds yesterday of 6/4. PICTURE: Andrew Matthews/PA.
