Sir Patrick's American bid to fight Trump

The British actor said he had asked “Washington insiders” what he could do about the controversial US leader when visiting last month.

He told US show The View: “My wife and I, we had gone to Washington to see good friends of ours.

“We wanted to ask them ‘what do we do, what do we do?”

Sir Patrick, 76, who was born in Mirfield, West Yorkshire, said: “All my friends in Washington said there is one thing you can do. Fight, fight, oppose, oppose.”

“But I can’t do it because I’m not a citizen.

“Maybe the only good thing from this election is I am now applying for citizenship because I want to be an American too.”

Sir Patrick reprises his role as X-Men founder Professor X in Logan, which was out yesterday.

Sir Patrick was the latest guest on our new film podcast Kernels this week, discussing Logan, playing a character for 17 years and shoots so hot the crew members were on drips.

Fellow actor Alec Baldwin in preparing a little Trump protest of his own, lobbying to appear as him at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner which the president has confirmed he will not be attending.

But Sir Patrick’s views sparked debate on Twitter with @pamelaparizo saying: “I have always admired Mr Stewart as an actor, but deplore all these celebrities thinking their opinions are what matter or that they are the interpreters of what a good society ought to be.”

And @TheWhiteSpectre said: “It’s good that he’s actually standing up to Trump then whining like all the other celebrity’s whining about moving to Canada.”

But @mikenaidu said: “Grow up Stewart. President Trump is a better man than (you).”

And @FreezePeach said: “It seems that after a few years of being a Hollywood multi-millionaire, you lose all sense of self-awareness and humility.”
