Seven-year-old John Churchill and his father Randolph, Sir Winston’s great grandson, visited The Royal Mint in south Wales yesterday to strike one of the solid silver coins.

The £20 piece is to go on sale to mark 50 years since Churchill’s death, just one of many commemorations to mark the anniversary.

Mr Churchill said: “It is fantastic to see so many and such varied activities taking place to celebrate everything that he achieved during his long life. We need to ensure that his legacy is sustained for the benefit of future generations.”

Shane Bissett of The Royal Mint said: “Churchill’s image, reputation and legacy are instantly recognisable all over the world; therefore it is only fitting that he takes pride of place on The Royal Mint’s third £20 for £20 coin.”

The train carriage which bore Churchill’s coffin will go on display at the National Railway Museum on January 30.
