Sniffer dogs out on city drugs beat

The spaniels will be deployed outside licensed premises in the city’s Safe Entertainment Zone, encompassing the city centre and Old Town, to alert police to anyone carrying illegal substances.

Arrests will be made and users referred to drugs treatment agencies where appropriate.

A projector highlighting the searches, which are part of Operation Trafford, will be shone onto the side of a building in Posterngate.

Previous searches over one night in March led to 13 arrests and the discovery of cannabis, cocaine and M-Kat, while in one venue bags containing cocaine and M-Kat with a street value of £500 were found dumped on the floor.

Sgt Ian Goode, from Humberside Police, said: “Over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend further drug dogs action is planned to run along high visibility policing. It should send out a warning to dealers and users that drugs will not be tolerated in licensed premises or as part of a night out. Those who don’t listen can expect to be identified and dealt with.”
