Snooker’s Mark Williams fined for over Crucible tirade

Snooker player Mark Williams has been fined £3,000 for offensive comments about Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre ahead of the world championships in the city.

The former world champion, 37, launched a foul-mouthed tirade against the Crucible on Twitter, describing it as a s*** hole and expressing the hope the tournament would move to China.

He was later booed by hundreds of fans before his first-round match in April.

A disciplinary committee of the World Professional Billards and Snooker Association yesterday found Williams had breached two of its rules and described his remarks as “unacceptable and potentially highly damaging to snooker’s long relationship with Sheffield and the Crucible Theatre”. It also ordered the Welshman to pay £1,000 costs.
