Snow and ice bring trouble on roads

In Bradford, a gritter overturned on Keighley Road, Hainworth, just before 6am in icy driving conditions, while an overturned lorry, near junction 23 of the M62, at Huddersfield, led to the closure of two lanes of the eastbound carriageway of the motorway, causing long delays for commuters.

The A64 westbound in York, from Towthorpe Moor Lane to Barr Lane, was closed for several hours following a three-car pile-up shortly after 8am. A man suffered minor injuries.

Residents in the Scarborough area woke up to a dusting of snow, while parts of the East Riding and the North York Moors were also among the areas that were covered in snow.

Yesterday’s snowfall in Scarborough resulted in some disruption to Scarborough Borough Council’s bin collection service. It said where collections could not be made, crews
would catch up as soon as they could.

Other parts of the country also experienced problems with the weather. Stanstead Airport, in Essex, shut for more than two hours and some road and rail journeys were delayed.

Forecasters said the snow had amounted to no more than “one or two centimetres in places” but nevertheless air and train passengers endured a difficult morning.

Michael Dukes, director of forecasting at MeteoGroup, the weather division of the Press Association, said the cold snap was due to remain for “some time yet”.

Conditions overnight were predicted to be cold, with some areas seeing temperatures plunging to as low as minus 8C (18F).
