Soccer legend Dave Mackay wins legal battle over Leeds United film

SEVENTIES football star Dave Mackay has won a legal battle over the portrayal of him in the Leeds United film The Damned United.

Mr Mackay started legal proceedings against the producers of the film, which depicts Brian Clough's ill-fated spell as Leeds United manager in 1974.

The film showed him breaking the players' revolt that was mounted at Derby County in 1973 in an attempt to get Clough reinstated following his resignation in a clash with chairman Sam Longson.

In reality, Mr Mackay had left Derby to become player-manager of Swindon Town.

Today, Nick Collins at Leeds law firm Ford & Warren confirmed Mr Mackay had won undisclosed damages and an apology.

Mr Mackay, now 75, said: "They twisted it. I would never have done anything that was disloyal. I wasn't even at Derby at that time."

Mr Mackay is the latest in a list of complaints about the film, which starred Michael Sheen as Clough and was based on a book by Leeds author David Peace.

Clough's family said they would boycott it, fearing it would paint for former manager as a foul-mouthed bully.

Former Leeds star Johnny Giles, won an apology from Mr Peace and publisher Faber & Faber over the original book .Mr Giles said it wrongly pinpointed him as a key figure in Clough's sacking from Leeds.

Clough lasted just 44 days at Elland Road after he was brought in to replace Don Revie.
