Socket set still right tool for job after 73 years as engineer amazes manufacturer

WHEN engineer Alan Soper bought a Britool socket set back in 1937 he could hardly have expected to be using the same tools 73 years later.

But the 89-year-old's story has now inspired the Sheffield manufacturer to begin a nationwide hunt for "true experts" who use their tools – with a 1,000 prize on offer.

Mr Soper, who still works a 44-hour week at his family engineering firm in Devon, is currently the man to beat, as not only does he still use the same tool set but not a single piece has been lost.

He said: "When I was 16 I had saved up enough money earning 5 a week to buy a Britool socket set, and it has lasted me ever since. Not a single piece of it has broken, not a single piece of it is lost, and it is still in its original case.

"When I do pack up, nearly all of my tools have been designated to my son, who is a Britool man too and my two grandsons who are also both engineers. It will be hard choosing who gets the socket set which has done me so well over the years."

Brand project manager for Britool, Liam Kettlewell, said: "When we heard Alan's story we were amazed."

Those who have their own Britool story should email [email protected] by the end of January.
