Some districts yet to submit a Jubilee street party application

With bank holidays falling on Monday, June 4, and Tuesday, June 5, it was thought that thousands of people across the country would use the four-day-long weekend to hold their own celebrations.

However, some councils in Yorkshire say they haven’t received a single application from people wanting to close their roads for a street party.

Not one of the estimated 410,000 people living in Kirklees has applied to the authority for a road closure while, in North East Lincolnshire, although there have been “a number of expressions of interest”, no firm applications have been received either.

A spokesman for Rotherham Council said only one application for a road closure had come in so far, while in neighbouring Barnsley, town hall officials have sent out five application forms to those who had expressed an interest in holding a street party, but none has so far been returned.

The picture is very different in other cities, including in Bradford, where the council has so far announced that five roads will close for street parties during the Jubilee weekend.

These include Great Horton Road as well as streets in Silsden, Wyke, Ilkley and Wilsden.

A spokesman for the authority added: “There are more than 70 events and projects taking place in the Bradford district to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

“The vast majority of these do not involve road closures as they are being held in community venues.”

Officers at York Council are currently dealing with eight applications for road closures, while, in Sheffield, 14 enquiries for street parties for the Queen’s Jubilee have so far been submitted.

A spokesman for Sheffield Council said: “To date, three people have completed application forms and returned them.

“The roads affected are Brier Close, Bannercross Road and Lindholm Gardens.”

In Leeds, nine applications have so far been submitted to the council for road closures, and there have been a further 17 expressions of interest from those keen to hold street parties.

A city council spokesman said: “We can’t give out any locations at the moment as the applications are still being considered.

“It’s also worth noting that some events don’t require road closures and we wouldn’t necessarily be informed about those.”

In Hull, three definite and two “tentative” applications have been submitted to the council while, in Wakefield, four applications have been returned, which are “still being processed”.

A spokesman for East Riding of Yorkshire Council said there had been “plenty of interest” in holding Jubilee parties but only four applications have so far been agreed – in Snaith, Kirk Ella, Lund and Londesborough.

North Yorkshire County Council said that applications for street parties had been received for Sutton under Whitestonecliffe; Main Street in Hebden; Market Place in Ripon and Park Chase in Harrogate.

In Kirbymoorside district alone, the county council is dealing with applications for Buck Lane in Huttons Ambo; a village street in Burythorpe; outside the schoolhouse in Old Malton, in Westow village and also for Main Street in Sand Hutton.

Nationally, the Big Jubilee Lunch has been launched by actress Angela Griffin, which provides people with the information they need to hold their own street party.

As well as advice on how to organise a road closure, the website offers information on issues such as games, decorations and food.
