Special year for art club exhibition as museum celebrates centenary

PAINTINGS, prints and drawings produced by members of Doncaster Art Club have gone on show at Doncaster Museum and Gallery, as part of the club's annual exhibition.

This year's show is celebrating the museum's centenary and the long-standing relationship between the art club and the museum.

Doncaster Art Club has been running since 1897 and members were instrumental in pressing for a museum and art gallery in Doncaster.

Its chairman Mike Shaw said: "This is a special year because of the long association between the club and Doncaster Art Gallery and Museum.

"Our members are very pleased to be exhibiting here during the museum's centenary year."

A special section is included in this year's exhibition, which features works from past club members drawn from the permanent collection.

Coun Cynthia Ransome, Doncaster Council's cabinet member for neighbourhoods, said: "In 1910 Doncaster Art Club's exhibition was the first to be held at the gallery's former Beechfield premises, before it was even officially open.

"I am delighted to see the club's work on show once again and I do hope that people in Doncaster will come and support the exhibition."
