Sports fans needed at Sheffield reminiscence groups

North Yorkshire-based charity Sporting Memories is working with Sheffield Council to set up the groups in five city libraries - Crystal Peaks, Ecclesall, Firth Park, Stocksbridge and the Central Library.

Sports fans are now being sought to help with the sessions and to research the sporting history of the city.

Coun Isobel Bowler, Sheffield Council’s cabinet member for neighbourhoods, said: “Sheffield has a proud sporting history and there are countless highlights to look back on.

“We’re asking sports fans to get involved in our new project and help run groups which will look back on our sporting history.

“They’re being set up to give older people a place to share memories of sport and meet up with other people. This can have real benefits and help people’s wellbeing, tackling issues such as loneliness and dementia.

“I hope as many people as possible get involved in what will be a really rewarding experience.”

Sporting Memories Network co-founder Tony Jameson-Allen said “We are really looking forward to launching the project in Sheffield and are excited to be working with the city’s libraries. There is such a rich sporting heritage here, we now need people who share a passion for sport to come forward and get involved.”
