This year is the fiftieth anniversary of Young Enterprise in the UK.

Meryl White, cookery writer and chairman of the South Yorkshire Young Enterprise Board, said yesterday: “We are really looking forward to meeting all of the students who have taken part in this year’s programme and finding out more about their businesses.

“The range of awards covers everything from excellence in innovation and enterprise to customer focus, social, ethical and environmental.

“Each year we are amazed by the standard of businesses set up and managed by these groups of young people.

“The students are so impressive and it’s great to see them stand up in front of more than 100 people and give presentations about their business.”

Ms White, who wrote the book Grandma Abson’s Traditional Baking, based upon her grandmother’s recipes, added: “At the beginning of the programme the students taking part decide upon a business idea and then allocate roles for all involved.

“They are given support and advice to help them get the businesses off the ground and, as ever, we have been extremely impressed by the creative thought processes that went into the original discussions and the range of successful businesses that have been created.

“We are looking forward to hearing about their business journey, finding out about what they had learned and problems they encountered and discover how much money their business has made.

“Once again our huge thanks go to all the businesses in South Yorkshire who have been involved with Young Enterprise and have given time and money to help support this project, which inspires and enables young people to get a taste of entrepreneurism.”
