Stars say fight for equality not over at movie's launch

STARS of a new film about a famous battle for equal pay agreed the fight is not over yet at its world premiere last night.

Made In Dagenham star Sally Hawkins, who plays strike leader Rita O'Grady, said she felt proud to be a part of the film, but it made her consider how women are still not yet equal to men.

She said: "I think it's great a woman won best director at the Oscars but I think that it's 2010 and it's only just happened is a little bit insane really."

Hawkins arrived in a vintage Ford car with co-star Bob Hoskins, while fellow cast members Bond girl Rosamund Pike and Jaime Winstone and Dagenham girl Sandie Shaw, who sings on the soundtrack, signed autographs for cheering fans.

One star Miranda Richardson said how proud she was to play Pontefract-raised Labour MP Barbara Castle in the new film.

It was directed by Nigel Cole, whose previous movies include Yorkshire-based Calendar Girls.
