Steam rises over Scotsman fiasco

THE engine was built in Doncaster in 1923 by LNER as a Class A1, the most powerful locomotives used by the railway.

It initially numbered 1472m but in 1924, when it was selected to appear at the British Empire Exhibition, it was renumbered 4472 – and had been given the name Flying Scotsman after the London to Edinburgh rail service. It was the first steam locomotive to be recorded travelling at 100mph.
