Steel jobs go as downturn hits orders

MANAGERS at one of Sheffield’s largest private employers yesterday said they were planning redundancies as part of plans to “combat recessionary pressures”.

Sheffield Forgemasters, which currently employs about 800 people, said 28 jobs were likely to go. It follows a similar announcement at this time last year.

Graham Honeyman, chief executive at Sheffield Forgemasters International Ltd, said: “Sheffield Forgemasters is to make 28 jobs redundant.

“These are measures to streamline the company and combat recessionary pressures, which are affecting order intake for some of our departments, preserving the vast majority of jobs at the company and focusing firmly on the long-term future.

“The at-risk positions include some managerial staff, administrative staff and hourly paid employees.

“It is expected that many will be handled on a voluntary basis and as much flexibility as possible will be offered to allow redeployment of individuals.”
