Step forward for regeneration project

A £400M urban regeneration scheme in Hull – which recently won a national planning award – is set to take another leap forward next week.

The Newington and St Andrew's area action plan, by regeneration agency Gateway and Hull Council, won a "planning process" award from the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI).

The initiative, one of the largest regeneration schemes in Yorkshire, aims to transform a rundown area of the city including major improvements to 9,000 homes in areas of severe deprivation and shrinking communities.

On Monday, council leaders will be recommended to adopt the Newington and St. Andrew's Area Action Plan as a statutory planning document.

Mark Jones, head of Economic Development and Regeneration, said it will be the first one to form part of the Hull Development Framework – the planning touchstone for the future development of Hull which is to replace the old Local Plan.

"To adopt such a plan-based approach to the area would deliver certainty to investors and external public funders in order to provide a long term regeneration programme and deliver the greatest investment and funding potential," he added.
