Stores welcome fall in shoplifting

Retailers in Bradford city centre have welcomed a 41 per cent drop in shoplifting offences over the last four years.

Between January and November 2010, there were 383 fewer offences than the same period in 2006 when the Bradford City Centre Beat partnership was formed.

Based in the Kirkgate Centre, the partnership has more than 170 members from the business community.

Members share information with West Yorkshire Police and Bradford Council to help combat crime.

City ward neighbourhood policing team, Inspector Kevin Pickles, said: "Through a radio link system, the partnership has instant access to Bradford's CCTV control room, other members and the neighbourhood policing team.

"The partnership have a banning scheme for convicted shoplifters that has proved extremely effective.

"Members in the business community also have access to images of prolific offenders in order to identify and monitor them.

"At the moment we have an operation ongoing to tackle the issue of pickpockets in the centre and these links mean we have many extra eyes and ears out there."
