Street art hits the gallery as Bansky prints go on show

reclusive graffiti artist Banksy is among a group of painters who are represented in a new exhibition which recently opened in Barnsley.

The show, called Street Art: Contemporary Prints from the V&A, is a touring exhibition which organisers say aims to bring modern work off the street and into the gallery.

Work went on display at The Civic, in Hanson Street, Barnsley on January 27 and will remain on show until March 18. The exhibition is open every day.

A Civic spokesman said: “This exhibition explores the ways street art has moved away from the painted wall into the medium of printmaking, creating distinctive, exciting visuals along the way.

“Drawn from the Victoria and Albert Museum’s internationally renowned collection of print, this exhibition showcases work from both established and emerging street artists from Britain and from around the rest of the world, including names such as Banksy, Eine, Miss Tic, Shepard Fairey and Swoon.

“Street artists produce work in a variety of media including the works on paper seen in this exhibition.

“Street art prints offer the opportunity to collect and preserve this otherwise ephemeral art form, which now moves between the street and the gallery.”
