Student seriously hurt in early morning crash

A STUDENT was seriously hurt in a hit-and-run crash near Sheffield railway station early yesterday.

Police were called to Sheaf Street shortly after 3am, following reports of a collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian.

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police said the vehicle failed to stop at the scene.

The spokesman added: “A 19-year-old man was taken to hospital to be treated for his injuries, which at this time are thought to be serious.

“A 21-year-old man is helping police with their enquiries.”

Officers later appealed for any witnesses to call them using the non-emergency number – 101.

Meanwhile, police said yesterday that they had finished their investigation into another incident in Sheffield – in which a cyclist had suffered a broken jaw and a broken wrist.

The 32-year-old woman was cycling in Pinstone Street, towards Furnival Gate, at about 1.20pm on Friday September 27 when she came off her bike.

Initial reports suggested she had been hit by a taxi, but South Yorkshire Police said yesterday that there no other vehicles had been involved.
