Students in zombie facepaint row after union event ban

STUDENTS were turned away from a students' union club night because their zombie face paint could have been considered racist.

Bouncers told members of the University of Sheffield physics society, who were on a zombie-themed bar crawl, that they had to wash off their black and white face paint to get into the union for "race reasons".

Some students had already been allowed into the union club night on October 25 before others were turned away.

The president of the university physics society Sheffield Physoc, Charlotte Nicolaou, 21, had to tell fellow students to remove their face paint before entering the club.

She said: "I would like to know what we can and can't do.

"I am confused and annoyed because I had to get people to wash their face paint off.

"We couldn't believe it and were annoyed that other people in our group had got in.

"

The Students' Union does not currently have an official policy on face paint.

The finance officer at Sheffield Students Union, Tom Hastings, said: "On this particular occasion, the request to remove the face paint was a mistake and done in error.

"It's clear that no members of the society were dressed inappropriately.

"Whilst it is positive that our security staff were aware of our anti-racism policy, these students should have been let into the venue without question."
