Students who have struggled with school display their talent for art

All the pupils, aged 15 or 16, involved in the Face2Face event had spent time in the Fountain House Pupil Referral Unit near the city centre over the past two years.

Lee Carver, art teacher at Fountain House, had been invited to stage a show at the Kingswood College of Arts. More than 30 pieces of work were produced by the teenagers, ranging from self-portraits to icons of popular culture, such as sporting and music stars.

Mr Carver said: "One of the unique things about this exhibition is that the students have all struggled at some point with mainstream education."

Some were on permanent placements, some were on six-week placements, and others attended an arts workshop run by Mr Carver. He added: "This exhibition proves they possess a lot of ability and the exhibition promotes their artistic talent as well as their commitment to learning and being motivated.

"The pupils have worked extremely hard. More than 50 people turned out for the opening night and the feedback was very positive. It is really high quality work. Everyone who has contributed to making the event a success should feel very proud."
