Suicide bomber’s widow hunted over terror attack plot in Kenya

Anti-terrorism officers in Nairobi are trying to trace a woman whose passport picture bears a strong likeness to Samantha Lewthwaite, 28, who was married to Jermaine Lindsay, the bomber from Huddersfield who killed 26 on a Tube train near King’s Cross in London.

Efforts are being made to determine whether the woman and Ms Lewthwaite are the same person, with officials in the UK and Kenya unable to rule out the possibility.

An official in Nairobi confirmed that a warrant had been issued for a woman using several identities, one of which is that of Ms Lewthwaite.

Kenyan authorities suspect that the woman may have been part of a cell planning a terror attack on the coastal city of Mombasa last Christmas.

She evaded capture when police carried out a raid on the group last December, although another Briton, Jermaine Grant, 29, from Newham, East London, was detained.

Grant has been charged with possessing bomb-making material and conspiring to cause an explosion. He is due to face trial in Kenya in May.

The authorities are also reportedly searching for another British suspect, Habib Ghani, from Hounslow, west London, who is understood to have moved to Africa several years ago.

Scotland Yard said a small team of detectives went to Mombasa after the raid. The officers have since returned to the UK.

Kenyan police believe the woman fugitive entered the country on a forged South African passport in the name of Natalie Faye Webb. The name is thought to be that of a victim of identity theft.

West Yorkshire Police, which investigated the 7/7 bombings with MI5 and Scotland Yard, say they are not involved in the current inquiry.
