Talented young cricketer’s death on Tube line ‘senseless tragedy’

Surrey county cricketer Tom Maynard has died after he was hit by a train in the early hours of yesterday.

The 23-year-old batsman, who was widely tipped as a future international and who had already toured with England Lions, was struck near Wimbledon Park station on the London Underground District Line shortly after 5am.

The Cardiff-born cricketer was the son of former England and Glamorgan batsman Matthew.

It is thought he may have been trying to escape police shortly before his death.

Officers tried to pull over a black Mercedes, which was being driven “erratically”, an hour before Maynard’s body was found on the tracks.

The Metropolitan Police said it was still trying to identify the man and that the Directorate of Professional Standards and the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) had been informed.

British Transport Police said: “The incident was reported to BTP at 5.03am and is currently being treated as non-suspicious. A file will be prepared for the Coroner.”

An ambulance was called but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Surrey County Cricket Club described the batsman as “incredibly talented”. The club said: “He had impressed in all forms of the game. His future potential was unlimited, with experts both inside and outside the club predicting he would soon follow in the footsteps of his father Matthew by graduating to full England honours.”

Surrey’s Friends Life t20 game against the Hampshire Royals at the Kia Oval scheduled for tomorrow has been postponed.”

Surrey chairman Richard Thompson said: “There is a profound sense of loss at the passing of Tom. To lose anybody at such a young age is an utterly senseless tragedy.”
