Talk on restoration of historic mill

A MAJOR restoration of one of the most historic mills in the Yorkshire Dales is to be placed under the spotlight, with a talk to civic society members.

The history and restoration of Gayle Mill, just outside Hawes in Wensleydale, has recently been extensively researched by historian Angela Leathley on behalf of the Friends of Gayle Mill and the Gayle Mill Trust. She has incorporated her research into the changing fortunes of the mill over two centuries into a new edition of her book The Gayle Mill Story and will be giving a talk based on her findings at Ripon Civic Society’s meeting on Thursday, December 1.

The building has been used as a cotton mill and for flax and wool spinning, as well as domestic premises and military quarters.

David Winpenny, chairman of Ripon Civic Society, said: “The history, saving and restoration of Gayle Mill provide a fascinating insight into our past and into how we can breathe new life into old buildings.

“We are very much looking forward to Angela’s talk on this special place.”

The meeting takes place at Allhallowgate Methodist Church Hall at 7.30pm.
