Tea party invitation for a Larkin toad

ONE of the Larkin toads is going out for tea this weekend.

A fibreglass sculpture created in honour of Philip Larkin will make a short trip to the poet's former house in Newland Avenue, Hull, where an annual tea party is being hosted for the Larkin Society.

The Larkin Toad is one of 40 metre-high toads, each with a name, sponsor and a unique identity, which have been installed around the city as part of events to mark the 25th anniversary of the poet's death.

The toad will be leaving Princes Quay shopping centre around 6pm on Saturday and will be back by 10am on Sunday.

Clare Huby, the Larkin with Toads manager, said: "We felt this was a lovely opportunity for the toad to be part of the garden party in Larkin's honour and he will return to his home in Princes Quay after the party.

"We will be leaving a note to let visitors know about his summer holiday, and reassuring them he will be back soon!"
