Teenager guilty of murder

A teenager who stabbed his grandmother to death and seriously injured his grandfather as they lay in bed has been found guilty of murder.

Lewis Dale, 17, killed Irene Dale, 78, and seriously injured her husband Allan, 80, with a kitchen knife.

A jury at Hull Crown Court yesterday found Dale guilty of murder and attempted murder and he will be sentenced at a later date.

The teenager attacked his grandparents as they were in bed at their home in Summergangs Road, in Hull, in April last year.

He was a user of the drug mephedrone which is also known as meow meow or M-Cat and was a so-called “legal high” before it was outlawed in 2010.

Dale claimed he was suffering a drug-induced psychotic episode when he attacked his grandparents, with whom he was living at the time.

Mr and Mrs Dale, who had been married for 50 years and had lived in the house for 40 years, had gone to bed at about 10.30pm on Friday April 26. Dale went into their room in the middle of the night and first stabbed his grandfather in the chest.

When Mrs Dale woke up and shouted at her grandson “Lewis, what are you doing?” the defendant turned on her and repeatedly stabbed her as she hid under the duvet.

He then ran downstairs after throwing the knife at Mr Dale, who barricaded the room after the teenager left.

The jury was told Dale left in a taxi ordered by his drug dealer, taking a TV from the house with him. He was arrested in Hull city centre later that night by armed police.
