Teenager held as family appeals for witnesses to knife killing

A YOUTH aged 17 has been arrested on suspicion of murder by police investigating the death of a Sheffield man who died from a single stab wound.

Joe Walker, 23, from Intake, died after a knife attack on land off Raynald Road, in Manor, at around 5am on Saturday.

Police arrested a 17-year-old from Sheffield yesterday afternoon in connection with the incident. He was being held last night for questioning.

Mr Walker’s family have urged witnesses to the incident to come forward to help the police investigation.

In a statement, his parents, who have not been named, said: “As Joe’s parents and family, we cannot believe the pain and heartache that evil has brought to our family.

“Those who knew and loved Joe would say that he was a cheerful lad who would put a smile on anyone’s face who met him.

“Can we ask as a family that if there is anyone who witnessed what happened to Joe, that you show him your respect by giving any information at all to South Yorkshire Police?

“Please, if you know anything that would assist the police get in touch with them, as this is not the time to hold back.

“Our family ask that we be left to grieve and try to come to terms with our loss.”

Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding Mr Walker’s death.

Residents have said they heard a rowdy party taking place in the neighbourhood overnight Saturday, while others reported hearing screaming coming from the area.

South Yorkshire Police’s Temporary Detective Superintendent Phil Etheridge said: “I echo the appeal from the family, as you may think a piece of information is irrelevant, but it may be vital to our inquiry.”
