Terry’s site development stalled

IT took five years to get past planners and was dubbed one of Yorkshire’s most significant developments.

But 18 months after plans to redevelop the former Terry’s chocolate factory in York were passed, the 27-acre site still stands empty.

Concerns are growing about the future of the site, which was bought by York-based developers Grantside Ltd for £26m in April 2006.

York Council Cabinet member for city strategy Coun Dave Merrett said he did not envisage the delay once the £200m scheme was eventually backed by councillors in February last year.

He has called for Grantside to step up security on the site, which he says has become a target for vandals.

“I’m very concerned at what’s happening with the site. It’s imperative that Grantside steps up security to protect the historic buildings. Obviously I would like to see the approved development coming forward at the earliest opportunity,” he said.

The long-awaited Chocolate Works project – which was refused in 2008 amid concerns about transport and infrastructure – is set to include two hotels and a business park, as well as homes.

A spokesman for Grantside Ltd said the firm was looking to start work “at the earliest opportunity”. The company blamed delays on legal issues, including over 60 planning conditions, which needed to be satisfied.
