Tesco not stocking Military Wives single at army base store

Customers complained that the store, at the largest military base in Western Europe, did not have copies of the hit charity song Wherever You Are which is currently outselling the rest of the top 20 combined.

The Military Wives were formed by Gareth Malone for BBC2 programme The Choir. Their efforts has been widely recognised throughout the military and husbands and service friends travelled with them this week to see a performance outside the HMV store in London’s Oxford Street.

The group’s co-ordinator Sarah McAllister, whose husband Peter serves with the Medical Corps, said: “I think it’s a real shame that Tesco isn’t supporting the single, which is raising money for the Royal British Legion and the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association.”

Retired primary school headteacher Glennis Walton, from Scotton in North Yorkshire, tried to buy the single. “They told me the store isn’t big enough,” she said.

“Well, it’s big enough to take the money from the best part of 30,000 military personnel.”

A Tesco spokeswoman said: “We are sorry to customers at our Catterick Garrison store as demand is very high and the single has sold out.

“We are working very hard to get more copies to the store.”
