Test results awaited on honeymoon couple

POST mortem examination results are expected today for the West Yorkshire couple who were killed in a road smash while on honeymoon in the Maldives.

The bodies of Emma and Jonathan Gray, both 25, have been returned to their home town of Halifax and are expected to be released by the coroner soon so funeral arrangements can be finalised.

The couple, who married at St Bartholomew’s Church in Ripponden a week before their deaths in the early hours of Saturday, August 6, leave a six-month-old son, Jake. He is currently being cared for by family in Halifax.

The newlyweds died when the 700cc quad bike on which they were riding as passengers crashed into a tree.

The driver of the Suzuki 2007 King Quad 700, 23-year-old Filip Eugen Petre, was seriously injured in the crash and is still recovering in hospital. It is understood that his passport has been confiscated by police.

Previous reports from the Maldives suggested that the bike on which the Grays were riding at the time of the tragic crash was unlicensed and unregistered.

However, according to latest reports, the vehicle was registered to the luxury Kuredu Island Resort and Spa, but as a tractor – a category used for vehicles transporting goods, not passengers.

The quad bike on which the Grays were travelling would also not have been intended to carry any people other than the driver, it is understood.

Reports also claim that Petre held a Swedish category B driving license, which would legally allow him to drive such a vehicle in many European countries.

Under Maldivian law, foreigners are able to drive in the country for a period of up to 90 days without a local licence.

It is thought that the funeral of Mr Gray, a manager at a kitchen design firm, and his wife, an “outstanding” teacher at Holy Trinity Primary School, may be held at Halifax Parish Church as so many friends and family are expected to attend the service.
