Thankful mother's joy over recovery of boy after crash

Max Normington's mother Lisa was told the two-year-old might not survive the accident or could be left with brain damage.

He was taken to intensive care after being hit by a car while playing near his grandmother's house in Sowerby Bridge, near Halifax, just over a week ago.

He was transferred from Huddersfield Royal Infirmary to Leeds General Infirmary where he was put into an induced coma so doctors could fully assess his injuries. He suffered a broken jaw, ruptured spleen, bruised lungs and fluid on the brain.

Ms Normington, 27, of Spring Hall Place, Halifax, who works for the NHS in Bradford, said a neurosurgeon was on standby in case he needed brain surgery.

But he came out of the coma and has made such a good recovery he was allowed home at the weekend. "He's doing really well," she said, "even the doctors are amazed at how well he his doing. He's definitely had someone looking out for him."

He will still need to visit hospital for check-ups but is already managing to eat again.

She said she wanted to thank all the neighbours who helped Max when the crash happened and all the staff at the hospitals where he was treated.

One woman gave the little boy mouth-to-mouth resuscitation after the accident.

"People were coming out of their houses to see if there was anything they could do." She said she was incredibly relieved her son has recovered.

"People keep checking I'm OK but I'm his mum, I don't need anything. I've got what I need because he's here. Every night that I go to bed I'm so thankful."
