The longest knight... Children come face to face with 7ft time traveller

CHILDREN visiting Bolsover Castle, near Chesterfield, yesterday met a seven-feet-tall, time travelling knight called Will – English Heritage's latest weapon to encourage youngsters to enjoy history.

"Time Traveller Will" was at the castle at the start of a nationwide tour to encourage families to take part in history-themed activities during the school holidays.

Andrea Hill, English Heritage visitor operations manager, said: "Time Travellers Go events are being held at Bolsover Castle from Monday to Friday every week during August and each week has a different theme.

"Children will be able to get hands-on with history in activities like learning to become a knight in the Knight Academy, finding out what it would have been like to be placed in the stocks, taking part in a mini siege and planning their own highway robbery.

"The events are hosted by colourful historic characters who remain in character the whole day, making sure children experience a truly memorable day out."

The first such event at Bolsover Castle this summer, Time Travellers Go Medieval, will run each day from Monday to Friday. Activities will include table-top jousting, sieges of a model castle and medieval games.
