The statue of legendary United manager Don Revie was lowered into place at the club’s ground yesterday morning.

The operation began at dawn ahead of the official unveiling tomorrow of sculptor Graham Ibbeson’s work.

The work came to a temporarily halt though – when workmen found their drill was not big enough to secure it and they had to go a hire shop for a bigger one.

The unveiling is due to be attended by Revie’s children, Duncan and Kim, as well as members of his team that won the FA Cup in 1972.

Mr Ibbeson’s £90,000 statue was erected next to the Centenary Pavilion, opposite the East Stand.

His other work can be found in more than 30 towns and cities around the country.

Leeds has a second piece – his statue of Second World pilot Arthur Aaron, who was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for saving the lives of his crew despite being fatally wounded.

Mr Ibbeson admitted feeling “emotional” – even though he hails from Barnsley. “Don’s daughter said it looks just like her father. That’s a fitting tribute to me and a nice pat on the back.”

The statue will be officially unveiled tomorrow at 11am.
