Thistle be a record

Standing proudly at over 12ft tall, this thistle could be the tallest known to man.

That’s the view of John Lowde, 86, who could tend to his grey scotch thistle in his front garden from an upstairs window. “It’s about 12ft tall and the same in width. It has over 100 flower heads and is a wonderful sight,” he said.

Retired miner John, of Langold, Notts, who has grown thistles before to a modest height of 4ft, believes this thistle is a true novelty and could be a new record.

The statuesque prickly-leaved plants have been known to reach 10ft before although the official Guinness World Record is an 8ft specimen in Canada.
