Thousands brave summer showers to make agricultural event success

THOUSANDS of people flocked to one of Yorkshire's longest-running country shows yesterday, braving unseasonal winds and the odd summer shower.

The 124th Malton Show at Scampston Park drew people of all ages to watch and take part in its celebration of agriculture.

As well as horse, livestock, sheepdog and falconry displays and class events, visitors were also treated to terrier racing and a parade of more than 100 well-maintained vintage tractors.

There was also a chance to buy fresh produce at the show's farmers' market, trade and craft stalls, a tug-of-war and a fancy dress event in the main ring.

Show spokesman Tom Watson said he was delighted by the turnout. He said: "We had a bit of rain first thing but since then it's been fine and as I look now there's a large queue waiting to get in.

"It looks like the attendance is going to be as good as we have had for a long, long time, it's really, really good."

Mr Watson said the continued success of the event had vindicated the decision to move the show from its traditional Thursday slot in June to a Sunday in July.

"It was a bit controversial at the time but I think now people have accepted it's been a good move," he said.

He added: "Everybody seems to be enjoying themselves."
