Three held as Huddersfield and Millwall fans clash at play-off

POLICE were forced to break up "ugly" scenes between football fans today after Huddersfield's League One play-off semi-final match.

Three fans were arrested after trouble flared in the stands following the final whistle in the goalless first-leg match between Huddersfield Town and Millwall at the Galpharm Stadium in Huddersfield.

Officers with batons entered the visiting fans' section of the ground as bottles were thrown on to the pitch and between the two sets of supporters.

One Millwall fan was taken from the stand with what appeared to be blood on his face.

A spectator, who did not want to be named, said: "It kicked off in the Millwall end behind the goal. They started lobbing bottles and things and they all rushed to the bottom corner, where the Huddersfield fans were.

"The Huddersfield fans were also throwing stuff back at them and it all got a bit ugly.

"The police stopped it fairly swiftly by forming a cordon and pushing the Millwall fans back up the stand."

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "There was an outbreak of minor disorder at today's Huddersfield Town versus Millwall game, where police had to draw batons to secure order at the ground.

"The disorder was quickly brought under control."

The spokesman said three Millwall fans were arrested for public order offences.

Earlier this week, West Yorkshire Police joined forces with Metropolitan Police officers in London to make 13 arrests after trouble at a previous fixture between the two clubs.

Eight fans were arrested in south-east London on Wednesday and another five were questioned in Huddersfield yesterday.

All were arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and released on bail with conditions banning them from attending any football matches.

The arrests were in relation to an incident on Wakefield Road, in the Waterloo area of Huddersfield, after a game on April 16.

The disorder was believed to have involved around 40 people and police said they were examining CCTV footage to identify others.

Today's play-off for promotion into the Championship saw sixth-place Huddersfield face third-place Millwall. The two teams will play the second leg at the New Den on Tuesday night.
